Circular Staircases

This magnificent circular was enhanced with Cherry rails, treads and posts. Each tread and riser is bowed to create this flared effect. This stair was extended beyond the outside radius rail and housed into a square wall. Curvoflite’s moulded rail #R355 and Birch tapered balusters were selected to compliment this traditional style stair.

Curvoflite Stairs And Millwork was the first company to nationally advertise the all wood spiral and circular stairs in the Sweet’s Catalog, a reference bindery for Architects and General Contractors. In keeping with the long history of this third generation family business, we are holding true to being the only company, to the best of our knowledge, who can be happily accused of “overbuilding” their stairs with a laminated beam (center stringer) up the middle of each stair. (In fact, this is the worst thing our ‘competition’ can say about us, and believe us, we keep our ears low to the ground in this small industry, and we do know what ‘they’ are saying about us. That’s why we still like all our ‘competitors’, they can’t say anything bad about us.) This center beam is placed at roughly the walking point of each circular stair, and is included whether you are supporting the stair with a wall underneath or not, so basically, every Curvoflite circular stair is considered a self supporting, free standing stair, a major detail of structural design we refuse to compromise on. This stringer is notched around each tread and riser, then reinforced every third or fourth tread (depending on the size of your stair) with a 5/8” multi-lam plywood, which is cross braced across the underside, stretching from the inside to outside stringers.

We also rabbet and dado our treads to risers, a nice joinery detail, which will prevent the treads from cracking when the wood naturally tends to swell, it will have some give, as opposed to treads being screwed to the risers from behind.

Curvoflite Stairs makes all of their own parts from rough lumber, except for the stock style balusters.
